“Monday Night Fights” return to Tijuana

For much of the 80′s and 90′s, Tijuana, Mexico, was known for their regular Monday night fight cards. Now after 10 plus years those explosive fight nights are returning on Monday, October 25th thanks to Antonio “Cañas” Lozada. Mr. Lozada’s Baja Boxing Promotions presents “Monday Night Fights” at Tijuana’s El Foro Theatre.

Many fight fans consider those Monday night fights as the “golden age” of local boxing where a large number of Tijuana fighters began their careers and ended them on the world stage. Names like Raul “Jibaro” Perez, Juan Jose “Dinamita” Estrada and Manuel “Mantecas” Medina and numerous others.

Monday night’s edition is full of up and coming Tijuana prospects as world ranked bantamweight David “Morita” De La Mora (21-0, 14 KOs) will risk his unblemished record against the dangerous Arturo “Indio” Camargo (25-18-2, 22 KOs) from Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico in the 10 round main event. The co-main event falls on the shoulders of once beaten Tijuana super flyweight Arturo “Fuerte” Badillo (18-1, 16 KOs) as he takes on Rodolfo “Chapulin” Garay (27-18-1, 18 KOs), also from Guasave, Sinaloa.

Baja Boxing will be pulling out all the stops for this special night as a vast array of their local fighters will be featured: jr. flyweight sensation Julio Cesar “Gatito” Felix (14-3, 5 KOs), two-time national amateur champion super bantamweight Jorge “Tremendo” De Alba (5-0, 5 KOs), featherweight Edwin “Tiburon” Solis (3-0, 3 KOs) and featherweight Juan Manuel “Taquero” Saldaña (1-0) among others.

The event will also feature the debut of 18 year old Raul “Jibarito Jr.” Quirarte in the welterweight division. Quirarte is the son of two-time divisional champion Raul “Jibaro” Perez who began his legendary career in those Monday night fight cards. Now his son hopes to follow in his foot steps.

Tickets are available at the El Foro Theatre box office which is located on Revolution Avenue just a five minute cab ride from the border.  Doors open at 7 p.m. with the first punch thrown at 8 p.m.
