Invicta Fighting Championships, Invicta FC3, held Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas.

On Saturday night, Jessica Penne (10-1) of Laguna Hills, CA became Invicta Fighting Championships’ first-ever title holder in the 105-pound atomweight division with a second-round stoppage of previously undefeated Japanese star Naho Sugiyama (8-1) of Kyoto, Japan.

On Saturday night, Jessica Penne (10-1) of Laguna Hills, CA became Invicta Fighting Championships’ first-ever title holder in the 105-pound atomweight division with a second-round stoppage of previously undefeated Japanese star Naho Sugiyama (8-1) of Kyoto, Japan. The bout was the Main Event on Saturday night’s women’s MMA show taking place at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas.

On Saturday night, it was Jessica Penne (L) of Laguna Hills, CA (L) versus Japanese star Naho Sugiyama (R) of Kyoto, Japan.

For the layman watching this bout, it appeared the taller Penne was in complete control throughout. Every time Sugiyama pressed forward she was met with the stiffest of jabs, hard jabs that at times snapped her head back. After catching a Sugiyama kick and pushing her to the floor, Penne transitioned into a full mount and looked to finish her off. It took awhile but Sugiyama finally bucked her way free and scrambled to last out the round.

In the second frame, it didn’t take long before Penne and her opponent were back down on the floor. This time it was Sugiyama holding top position. However, Penne made the transition to a triangle-choke and was soon pulling Sugiyama’s head down to get her to tap.

This was Sugiyama’s first loss as a professional. Penne now has a three-fight win streak since that lone defeat – a Bellator 25 loss to Zoila Gurgel in 2010.

In the show’s co-feature 135-pound Shayna “The Queen of Spades” Baszler (15-7) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota got an impressive second-round win over Sarah “The Monster” D’Alelio of San Jose, CA.

Round #1 was all Baszler who soon had D’Alelio off her feet and moved from side control to her opponent’s back. D’Alelio showed some fine defensive skills while getting punished by some hammer fists and more than a few painful heel stomping while defending the choke attempts. Baszler’s threatening submission game left D’Alelio unable to mount any kind of counter attack.

In the second round, Baszler continued her grappling-based assault and once again took the fight to the floor to unleash her vicious ground-and-pound. After transitioning to the back she immediately locked in the rear-naked choke and had D’Alelio tapping out at 37 seconds of that second frame.

Baszler, who improved to 5-1, may well be the next fighter in line for an Invicta FC title shot.

The much-anticipated bantamweight rematch between Leslie “The Peacemaker” Smith (4-2-1) of Pleasant Hill, CA and Kaitlin Young (7-7-1) of St. Louis Park, Minn. bore no resemblance to their first meeting back in April. This one had a completely different tempo as the rivals took their fight to the mat rather than exchange the flurry of strikes they did during the first go-around.

In the second round, it was Smith scrambling to top position off a missed kneebar attempt, and from the mount position unloaded a flurry of punches until the referee stepped in to stop the contest at the 2:19 mark.

Another local gal, Carla Esparza, from Redondo Beach, CA defeated Lynn Alvarez by way of TKO (punches) at 2:53 of Round 1.

Joanne Calderwood of Glasgow, Scotland defeated Ashley Cummins of St. Louis, Missouri by way of knockout (knee) at 3:13 of Round #1.
Stephanie Frausto defeated Amy Davis by way of submission (guillotine choke) at 0:48 of Round #1.
Jessamyn Duke defeated Marciea Allen by way of submission (armbar) at 4:42 of Round #1.

Kaiyana Rain of Los Angeles, CA

The 23 year-old Tecia “the Tiny Tornado” Torres of Fort Lauderdale, Florida defeated 38 year-old Kaiyana Rain another local gal from Kings MMA in Los Angeles, CA. Torres won by way of an unanimous decision (30-27 on all three score cards). Even though Rain looked good at times, Torres was often punishing her with hard counters and knee kicks. The 15 year age difference was a major factor as Torres exhibited the quicker hands and better mobility.

In the final match, Ediane Gomes defeated Katalina Malungahu via submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:19 of Round #1.
