Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin II of III
To the victor goes the spoils as Saul Canelo Alvarez took home all three of Gennady Golovkin’s title belts – the WBC World Middleweight Title, the IBO World Middleweight Title and finally the WBA Super World Middleweight Title on Saturday night.
SportofBoxing.com scored this Saturday evening, September 15, 2018 title bout at the T-mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada between the 28-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) and the 36-year-old Gennady Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) a 114-114 “Draw”. Only one of the three judges, Glenn Feldman was in agreement. While the other judges, Dave Moretti, and Steve Weisfeld had Saul “Canelo” Alvarez winning a slim Majority Decision of 115-113 in front of the sold-out crowd of 21,965.
ESPN’s boxing commentator Teddy Atlas was upset with the outcome stating he had Gennady Golovkin winning. With the scores being so close, a majority decision loss for Golovkin, he was adamant “that it was a robbery without leaving any fingerprints.” Referee Benjy Esteves Jr. did not an error make. Of course, there was really no need for a referee the way the two champions fought. There was very little if any clinching or reprimands to hand out since both boxers have this history of being clean fighters, always exhibiting exemplary sportsmanship.
Round one: GGG landed the majority of the punches and the cleaner shots to the head
Round two: Canelo landed solid left hooks, plus a dandy three punch combination
Round three: Canelo landed a successful body shot plus a big left hook
Round four: A second round for GGG, Canelo threw a punch after the final bell while GGG was more active throughout.
Round five: Canelo was busier and landed the harder shots but suffered a cut over his left eye
Round six: Canelo Alvarez maintained a slight edge in this 50-50 round
Round seven: GGG landed the harder shots in this very close round.
Round eight: in this close round won by Canelo, we saw GGG advancing but still on the receiving end of significant counters to the head
Round nine: GGG was busier and landed more of the cleaner shots in this close round
Round ten: was another very close round with GGG landing more of the cleaner shots
Round eleven: very tight round with GGG ahead early and managing to hold on
Round twelve: this was Canelo Alvarez’s round except for one final blow from GGG

For instance, Golovkin threw a lot more punches than Alvarez, when you add in the jabs thrown, but when you’re comparing the more effective blows Saul’s 143 power punches had to be more effective than Gennady Golovkin’s 116 power punches.
