Weigh-ins, predictions for Friday’s Bobby D Presents boxing show
Katarina “Kat” De La Cruz versus Amaris “Diamond Girl” Quintana
On Thursday, September 15, 2011, the boxers competing in Friday evening’s Bobby D Presents Boxing Show, “Stars of Tomorrow” were at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel for their weigh-in. Unlike the usual, more somber weigh-ins, this one was casual and upbeat.

The most upbeat were the group that accompanied Brian “Kold Blooded” McGlory of Southeast San Diego. They joked about his nickname and claimed McGlory was a huge Rick James fan.
On Friday, McGlory will be less jovial as he makes his pro debut against Jose Jesus Hurtado (3-3) of San Ysidro, CA. Up till this time, McGlory, a 200 pound cruiserweight who stands 6’5” tall, had been dunking basketballs for a living with a semi-pro team and training with Travis Stocking at his gym, the Gladiator School of Boxing in Spring Valley, CA.
Asked if he was a southpaw or orthodox, he said, “Either hand, I go both ways.” The Point Loma High grad has been training for four and a half years and decided to turn Pro after no one in the amateur ranks would fight him.
How anxious was he to get this first pro fight? Thursday morning he was out running his usual four miles when he got the call from his manager. “If you’re going to take this fight, I suggest you to stop what you’re doing and give your body some rest.” McGlory’s reply, “I’m here, let’s do it!”
Later, with his support group, he joked about the things he’s planning to do after getting in the ring for the first time. “Before that opening bell, I’m going to look up to the heavens and have this one tear drop. Then, I’ll cry out, “This one’s for you Rick!”
Jose Jesus Hurtado
McGlory’s opponent, Hurtado, had been training at the Alliance Training Center and also Oceans’ Boxing in Chula Vista. He was originally set to face Roman Carlos of Poway, CA. Then, as of Tuesday, Carlos, who was training hard for this bout, told the matchmaker that he weighed 154 pounds. That same day, Hurtado was still up around 178 pounds. That meant the catch weight of 165 pounds was undoable. The boxers were then asked if they could meet somewhere in the middle, say 170 pounds.
Carlos’ trainer, Ramzi Hassan, decided to pull his boxer out of consideration which forced the matchmaker, Jorge Marron, to go looking for someone else, closer to Hurtado’s weight.
That’s when McGlory’s people got the call. At their weigh-in, McGlory weighed 198 pounds, while Hurtado had now gone up to 183½ pounds. In other words, Hurtado went from fighting the smaller guy to fighting a much bigger guy in a matter of three days. If McGlory, who is untested, can box, the winner of this match should never be in doubt.

Also on the undercard, they have Pablo “Bronco” Armenta (6-0-0, 2 KOs) of South San Diego trained by David Gutierrez, going up against Guy Robb (5-0-0, 2 KOs) of Sacramento, CA. Robb said he was told about the fight early Thursday morning. These boxers are quite similar in their styles. Armenta, being a few inches taller should enjoy a height and reach advantage.
Robb, who is coached by Ray Woods of Bloodhounds, a private gym, had a remarkable amateur career (19-6) doing well in the Ringside Championship and then snatching a Bronze medal in the 2008 USA Amateur Championships.

Jonathan Garcia (5-0-0 with 4 KOs) started to box when he was only eight years old. He had much success in the Silver Gloves, Ringside Championships and then won the 2008 California Golden Gloves.
The native of Watsonville, CA is scheduled to go up against super-lightweight Frankie Martinez (0-3 with 2 no decisions) of Costa Rica who now lives in Las Vegas.

Garcia, coached by Jose Hernandez, has proven he can deliver. Only thing Martinez has proven is he can take punch.

Next up they have light welterweight Adrian Vargas (3-0) of the Undisputed Fitness & Training Center in San Diego’s Downtown. His much taller opponent, 23 year-old Luis Sanchez, arrived from Fairfield, CA. Sanchez, being the older brother of Alan Sanchez, has already had six uninspiring bouts with a record of 1 win and 5 losses. To his credit, every boxer that he faced was unbeaten.
In the Main Event they have 21 year-old Amaris “Diamond Girl” Quintana going up against the 37 year-old mother of four, Katarina De La Cruz in a six rounder. Quintana should have no problem out-boxing the taller De La Cruz to secure win number five. De La Cruz hails from Los Angeles.
