A night of resolution: Ramos vs Quirino, Canett vs Quintana

Once again, the Borizteca Boxing Management Group is in Ensenada, B. C., Mexico to showcase one of their pro boxing shows to the local fans. This Friday, April 24th show is at the popular Salon Casablanca and it’s scheduled to start a little after 7 p.m.

On Friday, April 24, 2015, Salon Casa Blanca in Ensenada is set to host “Fuego en el Puerto,” translation “Fire in the Port,” another top caliber boxing show starting at 7 p.m. The affair is being presented by the Borizteca Boxing Management Group headed by Saul Rios and Lou Messina in association with Koronel Promotions headed by Adrian “Cora” Colonel.

On Thursday, April 23, 2015, it was still dark and quiet at the Casablanca Salon as workers continued with their final hours of preparation for Friday’s show. That ambiance will change come Friday evening when the raucous boxing fans arrive.

Special guests include: Fernando “Kochulito” Montiel, the five-time world champion in three weight divisions, Robert Garcia, the former IBF Super featherweight Champ, now trainer of champions, who will be traveling south from Oxnard, CA, and of course there wouldn’t be any show without an assist from Ivan “Choko” Hernandez, the former WBO Super Flyweight Champion who now heads the Ensenada Boxing Commission.

That something extra about Friday’s show

In the Main Event, an eight rounder, there are two exciting flyweights battling it out for the Baja California State Title: Angel “Diablito” Ramos (9-0-1) of Ensenada taking on Jose “Gallito” Quirino (7-2-1, 2 KOs) of Tijuana. This bout alone should make for an exciting night of boxing. But of course there is so much more. Both the Ramos vs Quirino match and the co-feature, Oscar Alexis “Pillo” Canett of Ensenada vs Oliver Quintana of Mexicali, B. C., Mexico are rematches.

Yes, both are rematches of fights that need a resolution. Prior to the Ramos vs. Quirino match of October 5, 2013 at the Hipódromo Caliente in Tijuana, both young boxers had unblemished records before finding themselves embroiled in one of the most hotly contested matches ever. On that night, the judges’ scores read: judge Leobardo Ibarra Bracamontes 39-37 for Quirino, judge Esteban Franco had it 38-38 a draw, and judge Jesus Gonzalez had it 39-37 for Ramos. Tomorrow night, it will have been 568 days since that inconclusive ruling and this debacle can finally be settled.

In regards to the six-round super lightweight co-feature Oscar Alexis “Pillo” Canett (9-0-0, 1 NC, 5 KOs) of Ensenada has a similar score to settle with Oliver Quintana (4-0-0, 1 NC, 3 KOs) of Mexicali, B. C. On February 21, 2014, their fight ended up being stopped due to an accidental head butt. Many thought Canett, well ahead at the time, was a victim of Quintana’s desperate attempt to have the bout end in a “No contest.”

In a six round, super lightweight match you have Aguston “Towiz” Camacho (5-3-1) a southpaw from Ensenada going up against fellow southpaw Jonathan Corrales (5-2-0, 3 KOs) from Cuervos, B. C., Mexico.

Next, there’s a super middleweight clash between Cristian “The Russian” Olivas (2-0) of Mexicali, trained by San Diego’s Gabriel Quinones, going up against Miguel Cipriano (0-4) from Tijuana. In all four of his fights, Cipriano has been a knockout victim.

In Bout #4 you have Bryan Aquino Lugo (r) facing Leonardo Reyes (l).

Then it’s Bryan Aquino Lugo (4-1, 3 KOs) of Mexicali by way of San Herman, Puerto Rico going up against Leonardo Reyes in a four round flyweight match. The more experienced Lugo has been boxing for 12 years and had 106 Amateur bouts.

None but the brave: As of Thursday afternoon cruiserweight George Escalante of Spring Valley, Calif. was still uncertain as to who he would face on Friday night.

Cruiserweight George Escalante (2-0-0,1 KO) of Spring Valley, California will be going up against the ever dangerous TBA in a four rounder. Escalante’s original opponent, Ruben Porras of Tijuana failed to make it to Thursday’s weigh-ins.

Next, it’s Mike Haygood (0-3) from San Diego who will be going up against Miguel Zapata, the much celebrated flyweight who is making his professional debut. Zapata, who went 32-2 as an Amateur, is both a Golden Gloves and Baja California State Champion who trains at the same gym as Felipe Salguero who in 2010 won the vacant WBF Light Flyweight title and then fought three additional times for the title with two other organizations.

In the final bout, they have Jose Hernandez of Ensenada (1-6) going up against Juan Carlos Hernandez of Mexicali (3-0) in a flyweight match. Hernandez, who is 30 years-old, has three children and works in the produce business.
