Another entertaining Boxing Show for San Diego Boxing Fans

On Friday, September 16th, the Bobby D. Presents Boxing show returns to the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel with “Stars of Tomorrow,” a fight card celebrating Mexican Independence Day. On this fight card are many recognizable names.
In the main event, San Diego’s Amaris “Diamond Girl” Quintana (4-0-2) will be taking on Katarina De La Cruz (2-7-1) of Los Angeles in a six round flyweight match. As in the past, the always entertaining Quintana will leave it all in the ring and De La Cruz has a similar reputation.
At just 21 years of age, Quintana is the more polished of the two. She should have little problem if she remains small and gets in close to deliver the straighter punches. At 37 years of age, De La Cruz has several bad habits, one is the launching these wider, looping punches that leave her open and often tiring her out before the end of each fight. Yes, she’s faced the stiffer opposition in Ava Knight, Savanna Hill and Cindy Amador but the results are the same, another loss. The ladies were scheduled to face each other back on March 31, but De La Cruz backed out after being asked to have an eye examination which involved having her eyes dilated.
De la Cruz’s last fight, a loss against Cindy Amador, was on April 15, 2011. Quintana hasn’t fought since January 28, 2011, almost eight months ago, when she destroyed the pedestrian Blanca Raymundo who now stands at (0-4).
Featured in the semi-main event is featherweight Pablo “Bronco” Armenta (6-0-1, 2 KOs) scheduled to fight a four rounder against Noe “El Chamaco” Lopez (7-10, 4 KOs) a southpaw from Nogales, Mexico. You can forget Lopez’s dismal record, he’s battle tested and should be a stern test for Armenta. On his resume he has such notables as Charles Huerta, Ronny Rios, Luis Orlando Del Valle, Gary Russell Jr., Abraham Lopez and a fight I witnessed at Pechanga Casino versus Dat Nuygen. Many of the hacks at ringside believed as I do that Lopez should have won that fight. And keep this in mind, Armenta has yet to fight anyone with a winning record.
Late update on opponent for Friday’s Fight. Pablo “Bronco” Armenta will now take on Hugo Ramos from Palm Springs and Christian “Huevo” Bojorquez is now on the card and will fight Jesse Adame. The balance of the card remains the same.
On the undercard, local favorite Adrian Vargas (3-0, 1 KO) of National City, CA, is scheduled to face Luis Sanchez (1-5) of Fairfield, CA, the older brother of Alan Sanchez (8-2). Since Luis Sanchez hasn’t fought since January, for him this bout is somewhat of a comeback affair. The hard hitting Sanchez will have a height advantage and try to use his leverage as he stays on the outside. Vargas on the other hand will plow straight forward and work over Sanchez’s midsection. Unless Sanchez has recommitted himself, Vargas should have no problem adding win number four.
Also on the undercard, 24 year-old Roman “Two Time” Carlos of Poway will be making his pro debut when he faces San Ysidro, CA’s hard-hitting Jose “Gallito” Hurtado (3-3, 3 KOs) in a scheduled four rounder. For almost nine years Carlos worked with ex-boxer Chuck Weismiller in Poway and more recently (the last 7 months) with former light-heavyweight Ramzi Hassan at LA Boxing in Rancho Penasquitos. Hassan, now 48, retired in 1996 after facing such notables as Virgil Hill, Mike McCallum, Frank Tate and Michael Moorer.
Carlos, who has an unremarkable 18-13 record as an amateur, has sparred with Lester “El Cubanito” Gonzalez and amateur sensation David Barragan, another local boxer planning to turn pro. He. Although he fights orthodox, he’s been known to switch to southpaw.
As of Monday evening, Carlos weighed a slender 154 pounds while Hurtado was still over 170 pounds. The catch weight for the two gentleman was 165 pounds. It’s likely that the matchmaker is now scrambling to bring in another opponent for Carlos since the weigh-ins are just two days away.
Hurtado’s three wins came over opponents with a combined record of 8-43-4; his losses were to boxers with a combined record of 1-0. Two of his three opponents were making their debut. Hurtado’s weight gain has been an issue. For his last fight he weighed in at 196 pounds. In a previous fight he weighed only 157 pounds. At present, he must be on that seafood diet. He sees food and he eats it.
The show is scheduled for Friday, September 16, at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, 8110 Aero Drive, San Diego (next to Montgomery Field).
