Boxing returns to Ensenada, Borizteca Management Group to host 1st show

Boxing returns to Ensenada as the Borizteca Boxing Management Group is set to host their inaugural show at Gimnasio Oscar ‘Tigre’ Garcia on Friday, August 15, 2014.
With family in Ensenada, B. C., Mexico, San Diego’s Saul Rios, a former boxer now manager of boxers, always had these thoughts, call them yearnings, to promote boxing in the quaint, touristy town of Ensenada.
With it’s population now approaching a half million and it being one of the jewels along the scenic West Coast less than 70 miles from San Diego, this development should interest not only the local boxers but the boxing fans on both sides of the border.

With the support of the Ensenada Boxing Commission and it’s president Ivan “Choko” Hernandez, the former WBO Super Flyweight champion, the local fan base, interest from TV people to include Lic. David Montano Rodriguez of Televisa Ensenada and most importantly the local boxing community spearheaded by the former World Kickboxing Champion Jose Guardados, this major undertaking will now take place on Friday, August 15th at the Gimnasio Oscar ‘Tigre’ García in downtown Ensenada.
With last minute sponsorships still coming in, showtime is dead ahead. Like any sport that has the benefit of live TV streaming, the exposure on Televisa should get everyone talking about these monthly shows and the talented local boxers will finally gain the proper recognition so they too can share in it’s growth.

CEO Saul Rios: “People are wondering why we selected Ensenada as our site to launch this new venture. Why not? Look at all the great places to go. The climate is certainly a draw. It’s far easier to drive down the scenic coast than to drive four hours north, through a desert to arrive in Las Vegas.

The popular San Nicolas Hotel will be accommodating the visitors from out of town. At one time or another everyone from James Garner (bottom right) to President Ronald Reagan, from Steve McQueen to Mickey Rooney stayed here.

One of the first fighters signed for this big event was the undefeated and very popular Oscar Alexis Canett of Ensenada. (top, right) Canett and his proud step-father, who long ago rescued him from an orphanage, pose for a photo. Photos: J. Wyatt
“Everyone knows Ensenada is a great place to visit. Great food, wonderful people, and it certainly has a love affair with boxing. At this time, there are nine boxing gyms in town and just north in Tijuana, you have an additional 28.
“The food at the nearby restaurants has been highly touted especially when accompanied by the exquisite wines made from the grapes in the Valle de Guadalupe, another of Ensenada’s major tourist attractions.”
What does Borizteca Boxing Management Group bring to the table? Experience galore. The principles involved have 40+ years experience working for the various fighting sports promoters, assisting promoters like Bobby D Presents, Jorge Marron Promotions, Thompson Boxing Promotions, Epic Fighting and In Sync Productions.
Rios: “It’s finally time for us to strike out on our own. The Borizteca Boxing Management Group has worked with many boxers on both sides of the border. Among the fighters currently under contract, we have Victor “El Pelon” Ruiz (16-3, 11 KOs) a top Super Flyweight from Tijuana, Alexis “Pillo” Canett (6-0-1, 3 KOs) from Ensenada, the Arellano brothers, Israel (7-1, 6 KOs) and Antonio (6-2-1, 2 KOs) from San Diego, CA, the list goes on and on.
“Our plan is full proof. What we’re going to do is be one of the most active and respected promoters. We will work diligently and honestly within our local boxing community to present regular, monthly, quality shows in packed venues for presentation on Network TV.
“We also plan to assist the Albergue San Vicente, a hostel/shelter in Ensenada which belongs to the Institute of Human Rights for the Homeless and Migrant, a Roman Catholic, non-profit governmental organization run by the congregation of Missionary Sisters of St. Charles.
