Emmanuel Robles back home to headline latest Bobby D Presents fight card

On Thursday afternoon, the weigh-ins were completed for tonight’s Bobby D Presents Boxing show at the Crown Plaza San Diego Hotel in Mission Valley. On the fight card you have an interesting mix of combatants led by one of San Diego’s top pugilists Emmanuel “El Renegade” Robles (11-0-1, 3 KOs).

Robles’ pedigree, brilliance is unquestioned after the 26 year-old fought and defeated such notables as Jonathan Chicas (13-1), Yordenis Ugas (15-1) and Joshua Marks (8-4).

Challenging Robles in his hometown is the youngster, 19 year-old Carlos “El Guerrero” Valenzuela (6-1-0, 3 KOs) of Phoenix, Arizona by way of Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico.

Valenzuela, only 16 when he turned pro, got his career off to a rousing start by defeating his first six opponents. Then his management team made the unconscionable move to have Valenzuela fight in the U. S. against Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker on August 22nd at the Renaissance Worthington Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas.

Not only was the fight in Hooker’s backyard, Valenzuela was going up against a seasoned professional with a record of (14-0-2, 10 KOs) who has been compared to Tommie “Hitman” Hearns. Not only was the move premature, the out of his league Hooker had more experience, was taller and quicker, and no doubt outweighed Valenzuela on the night of the fight by at least 10 pounds. Hooker, a known fast starter with 8 of his 10 knockouts coming in the first two rounds, finished Valenzuela’s night at the 2:37 mark of round one. 

Now, instead of regrouping, learning from their mistake, Valenzuela’s management group in their infinite wisdom, has Valenzuela fight an even better boxer, a southpaw to boot, who is a natural welterweight. In the six previous bouts before facing Hooker, Valenzuela had never fought anyone over a lightweight. I guarantee, Vegas will not be offering odds on this fight.

Next up, they have 6’2” cruiserweight Dmytro Kucher (196 lbs.) of Kiev, Ukraine (21-1-0, 15 KOs) going up against the 33 year-old Galen Brown (200 lbs.) of St. Joseph, Missouri (42-28-1, 25 KOs).

After winning his first 20 bouts, Kucher lost his first fight, a razor thin, mixed decision loss to southpaw Llunga Makabu (13-1-0) of Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa by way of the Congo on July 13, 2013. In that fight the scores were 113-115, 114-114 and 114-115. You can’t get much closer than that.

Since that time, Makabu went on to win his next three contests by KO or TKO and Kucher hasn’t fought since.

Even with his inactivity, Kucher is still ranked #7 by the WBC. Tonight, he’ll be making his return against Brown, a veteran of 71 fights, who has a record of 1 win and 6 losses over the past 12 months.

To his credit, Brown has fought such notables as Fres Oquendo, Mariusz Wach, Tye Fields, Jr. Anthony Wright, Chauncy “The Hillyard Hammer” Welliver and Jordon Shimmel. He also stopped Donnie Penelton (13-155-5) in the 6th round of a scheduled 8 rounder, defeated matchmaker Donnie Davis and lost to MMA fighter Dewey Cooper.

The match that may turn out to be the “Fight of the Night” has San Diego boxing fans getting a rare, up-close look at the 20 year-old, Isaac “Brave-son” Dogboe (132.5 lbs.) of London, England by way of Accra, Ghana. The 2-0, 1 KO featherweight/super featherweight who stands just 5’2” tall is set to face light welterweight Ronald Rodriguez (134 lbs.) from Pomona, CA.

Dogboe, the 2013 ABA champion in the lightweight class, lost an ever so close match (9-10) to Satoshi Shimizu of Japan in the 2012 Olympics. The Angelic looking Dogboe has an impressive group of backers/investors which includes James “Lights Out” Toney.

Dogboe’s opponent Rodriguez (1-4, 1 KO), a victim of three KOs, has faced formidable opponents who at the time he faced them had a combined record of (16-2-1). Rodriguez hasn’t fought in two years and four months. His last fight, a first round KO loss at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, was to San Diego’s Giovani Santillan who will be fighting on the same night at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, CA.

Next up, we have the ladies, 39 year-old Brandy Badry (138 lbs.) from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (1-5) taking on 29 year-old Jillian Lybarger (137 lbs.) from Phoenix, Arizona (0-1) in a four round super lightweight match.

The different camps might take issue with the following assessment but you only live once. In television, film and theatre typecasting is the norm, a process by which a producer selects a particular actor who strongly identifies with a specific role. Brandy, who, except for her extensive tattoos, resembles a barbie doll, would now have to be listed as your typical biker girl. The affable Jillian, is your typical, perky girl next-door. With her short hair, she resembles an Olympian, either a soccer goalie, javelin thrower or perhaps the captain of the women’s volleyball team. She currently splits her time between MMA and Boxing. 

So, who are you going to put your money on – Badry or Lybarger? I got a feeling the Olympian’s going to win.

In another fun match we have the ultra popular Joe “The Bull” Delgadillo 238 lbs. (1-0) from Chula Vista, CA going up against one of Tijuana’s favorite sons Edgar “Porky” Najera 233 lbs. (0-3).

For more than a few years, probably since they opened their doors, Delgadillo has helped other fighters, younger and older, at the Alliance Training Center in Chula Vista. He’s often helped in the corner for his buddies Chris Martin and Jorge Ruiz. Every once in a blue moon, every three years, he’ll get the itch to get in shape and show everyone he hasn’t lost a step. This is one of those times.

“The Bull’s” opponent is “Porky” Najera who’s been boxing professionally for a year and a half and quite active as of late. He fought twice in August and he’s never failed to go the distance.  The Bull is hoping to end that streak.
