House of Boxing USA Amateur Show August 25, 2012
The following results were obtained from the USA Amateur Boxing staff well after the show took place. Your humble scribe was visiting family in Philadelphia at the time and therefore unable to attend this important show. If you see errors in spelling or in the results, we’d really appreciate a heads up so we can make any corrections.
Here’s an older photo of Gaby Romero when she fought for “Team Unified” in the Battle of the Badges at the Barona Casino.
In Bout #1, it was Gabriela “Gaby” Romero of the Undisputed Fitness & Training Center in El Cajon, a member of the Bomber’s Squad, earning an unanimous decision victory over Cindy Guerdra of Barry’s Boxing Center in Las Vegas.
In Bout #2, Jose Fernandez (Unattached) defeated Daniel Morales of the host gym, The House of Boxing.
In Bout #3, Sal Lopez of Barry’s Boxing Center, Las Vegas gained an unanimous decision victory over Juan Funez of the Ten Goose Boxing Gym. Funez is the nephew of Ricky Funez the well known trainer from the very same gym.

In Bout #4, 21 year-old Gilbert Lopez (155.6 pounds) of Golden Hands Boxing, Chula Vista, got the win over Joshua Rivera (158.6 pounds) of the San Diego Combat Academy.
In Bout #5, Fernando Munoz of The House of Boxing got the best of Louis Carrillo of Barry’s Boxing Center.
In Bout #6, Raul Meza of the Alliance Fitness and Training Center of Chula Vista, CA defeated David Martinez of the Black Tiger Gym on Miramar Road.
In Bout #7, it was Alexander Robinson of the Gladiator School of Boxing defeating Delvin Thompson of Barry’s Boxing Center in Las Vegas.
In Bout #8 it was George Cunanan (Unattached) getting the best of Zabir Noori of the Black Tiger Gym.
In Bout #9 it was Raymond Patterson of the Gladiators School of Boxing defeating Ivan Weston of the Victory Outreach Boxing Team.
In Bout #10 it was Jason Rivera of the San Diego Combat Academy defeating Jerome Norris of City Boxing, in San Diego’s Downtown.
In Bout #11 it was Jaime Barriga of Barry’s Boxing Center getting the best of Alfredo Vargas of Barrio Station.
David Gutierrez of Golden Hands Boxing earns yet another victory.
In Bout #12, it was David Gutierrez of the Golden Hands Boxing Club defeating Randy Zuzueta of Barry’s Boxing Center.
In Bout #13 it was Carlos Mora of the ABC Mongoose Gym, San Diego getting the best of Guillermo Garcia of the National City CYAC.
In Bout #14 it was Sebastian Silvestra of the Black Tiger Gym defeating Justin Awongo (Unattached).
In Bout #15 it was Jaime Swanson of Barry’s Boxing Center defeating Sam Sanders of ABC Mongoose.
In Bout #16, it was Gabriel Hernandez of the El Cajon Undisputed scoring a first round stoppage of Alfredo Ubario (Unattached).
And what can I tell you about our visitors from Las Vegas?
Barry’s Boxing Center was opened close to 30 years ago by former professional boxer Pat Barry and his wife/manager Dawn. After boxing professionally for eight years, Barry and his wife just couldn’t leave the sport they loved. While working in law enforcement, the couple opened the gym and have been dividing their attention ever since.
Barry has worked with such notables as former world champion Clarence “Bones” Adams, top featherweight contender Augie “Kid Vegas” Sanchez, plus a long list of amateur champions.
On May 8, 1999, Augie Sanchez (L) delivered a knockout blow in the 7th round to the Clown Prince of Boxing – Jorge “El Maromero” Paez, the former IBF and WBO Featherweight Champion of the World .
The Barry’s daughter, Dawn, married Augie Sanchez, one of Las Vegas’ best known, homegrown fighters. His most publicized fight was against the then WBO Featherweight Champion Prince Naseem Hamed on August 19, 2000. Sanchez lost that fight, but bounced back to defeat former WBC Champion Luisito Espinosa on January 6, 2001.
A year later, Sanchez was forced into retirement after the Nevada Athletic Commission denied him a license to fight. In both the Hamed bout and the John Michael Johnson bout of December 7, 2001, Sanchez was knocked out and had to be removed from the ring on a stretcher. Sanchez now leads the Barry Boxing Center coaching staff.
The Las Vegas contingent ended their road trip with a record of 3 wins 3 losses.
