“La Princesa Azteca” Jackie Nava retakes her throne

On Saturday night, Jackie Nava of Tijuana, B. C., Mexico (29-4-1, 13 KOs) reclaimed her WBA super bantamweight title after destroying Alys Sanchez (12-2-1, 4 KOs) of Maracay, Aragua, Venezuela. She scored the knockout victory at 46 seconds of round seven.
Nava, perhaps a bit rusty after a one year and eight-month layoff, became the victim of a flash knockdown in round one after being caught by one of Sanchez’s overhand rights which landed square on Nava’s chin and sent her flying backward to take a seat on the canvas. After the wake-up call, Nava came at Sanchez with this, shall we say assertive vengeance. How dare she do such a thing in my hometown in front of so many of my family and friends?
From that point on, Nava’s aggressive style had her opponent either backing up or circling in retreat. With Sanchez’s now familiar strategy of circling to her left, Nava began to clobber Sanchez with these big overhand rights which sent her to the canvas twice in round four. With Sanchez on her bicycle or holding, Nava tried repeatedly to run her down but couldn’t before the bell sounded.
In round five, while circling on the perimeter, backtracking, or trying to clinch, Sanchez slipped and went down. With the canvas underfoot being so wet, referee Romina Arroyo gave Sanchez the benefit of the doubt and ruled the fall was a slip. With Nava coming on so strong, taking one punch in order to deliver three, Sanchez must have felt helpless as if she were fighting an armored tank.
After a similar fall by Sanchez occurred in round six, in the same corner, Arroyo maintained the same ruling and called that fall a slip. For the remainder of the round, Nava’s punches were coming in bunches and often had Sanchez heading in reverse like a tossed rag doll.
In round seven, with Nava again chasing after her opponent, Sanchez got caught with a devastating, chopping, overhand right, followed by a left uppercut to the stomach and another right to the forehead. The accumulation of blows had her crumbling. After her legs gave out and she fell to her knees, referee Romina Arroyo could see she was finished and stopped the match. The most noticeable indicator was this ugly, inch and a quarter long, wide gash between Sanchez’s eye and eyebrow.

Nava’s previous fight, in defense of her WBA Super Bantamweight crown, was back on August 18, 2012, when she knocked Lisa Brown out in the third round. Since that time, she hadn’t fought. She quit temporarily for the most important reason of any woman, to become a mother. After giving birth to Frida, both Mom and daughter headed right back to the gym.
How she lost the weight, regained her physical conditioning, and mentality to get back to 122 pounds and the six pack of a stomach, is remarkable. And now, with this big win and the addition of Frida, it appears she is more motivated than ever.
And by the way, Saturday’s boxing show did include some male competitors, plus another world championship fight, and another duel between Mexico and Venezuela.
In the evening’s Main Event, David “Tornado” Sanchez of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico (24-2-2, 19 KOs) defeated Breilor “Zulianito Gold” Teran (13-9 -1, 6 KOs) from Caracas, Venezuela to win the interim WBA World Super Flyweight title. The 11th round knockdown of Teran insured victory and all three judges scored the bout 116-111 for Sanchez.

In the Main Event, David “Tornado” Sanchez of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico defeated Breilor “Zulianito Gold” Teran from Caracas, Venezuela to win the interim WBA World Super Flyweight title.
Also on the docket, the popular Tijuana super bantamweight Edivaldo “Indio” Ortega (18-0-1, 9 KOs) managed to get an unanimous decision win with scores of 79-1, 77-74 and 76-75, despite a point deduction for a headbutt in round five, over the more experienced Enrique “Duende” Bernache of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico (20-7-0, 11 KOs).

Former world Super Flyweight champion, 34-year-old Edgar Sosa (50-8-0, 30 KOs) reached the 50th win milestone after the 34-year-old Omar Salado (24-8-2, 15 KOs) of Tijuana was forced to retire. During the break between round four and round five, the fight doctor, Angel De La Torre checked the cut and deemed it too dangerous to allow Salado to continue. At this point in his career, Sosa’s record stands at 10 wins, 3 losses (6 KOs) in World Title fights.

Pre-fight Press Conference
On Thursday afternoon, Zanfer promotions held their press conference at the High-Performance Centre in Tijuana. It was attended by the First Lady of the State, Mrs. Brenda Vega Ruacho. She was in attendance because the Boxing Show is part of a fundraiser for the Children’s Rehabilitation Center Telethon, a project headed by the First Lady. Zanfer Promotions stated they were supporting the cause by donating 100 percent of the gate from Saturday’s show.
On the night of the fight a regular who’s who was on hand
The narrators from Box Azteca, the team of the “House of Boxing” Carlos Aguilar, Rodolfo Vargas, Eduardo Lamazon, Marco Antonio Barrera and Julio Cesar Chavez were available throughout to sign autographs and take souvenir photos. Along with several TV personalities, you had the Governor of the State, boxers Antonio Margarito, Jorge Arce, Giovanni Segura, etc., etc.
