Martin vs Huerta another San Diego vs City of Angels civil war

Most everyone in LA boxing circles has heard of Charles Huerta (16-2-0, 9 KO’s) and almost everyone in San Diego County’s boxing community knows the name, Christopher Martin (21-0-2, 6 KOs). In every bout they’ve been a participate, it’s been exciting. Each gives a hundred percent.

With their notoriety established and the promoters of Fight Club OC having such a keen eye for talent, it was inevitable this match-up would come to fruition. Friday evening, the two pugilists will be in the main event of TeleFutura’s “Sólo Boxeo Tecate.” The Hangar at the O.C. Fair and Event Center, with its fancy lights, large Jumbotron, wide open space, can only enhance what promises to be a fight that will be long remembered.

The bout will determine which of our local heroes will be moving closer to their shot at a world title in the ultra-competitive super bantamweight division which features people like southpaw Toshiaki Nishioka (38-4-3, 24 KOs) of Toyko, Japan, Rico Ramos (19-0-0, 10 KOs) of nearby Pico Rivera, CA, Teon Kennedy (17-0-1, 7 KOs) of Philadelphia, PA, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. of Bayamon, Puerto Rico and Jorge Arce (57-6-2) of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Chris Martin of Chula Vista, CA

San Diego native Christopher Martin who works out at the Alliance Training Center on 3rd Avenue in Chula Vista let the proverbial cat out of the bag in 2010, after he reeled off five impressive wins and none more impressive than his win over previously unbeaten Chris Avalos on national TV.

In that contest, the Showtime announcing crew appeared to be biased towards Avalos in their pre-fight introductions. After Martin gave Avalos a good old fashion ass-whooping, it was difficult for them to save face.

He followed that performance with a TKO of Jose Luis Araiza (29-2-0) and an unanimous decision victory over Yogli Herrera (22-13-0). The WBC and IBF organizations took notice and now have Martin ranked in their top ten.

Charles Huerta of Paramount, CA

Charles Huerta, the pride of Paramount, CA, is hoping to bounce back after his split decision loss to Raul Hirales Jr. (13-0-1) on January 28 at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in San Diego. The 24-year-old Huerta had won five straight before that loss. Huerta, who is now into his fourth year as a professional, once fought and beat Martin as an amateur.

Weights over the past two years: Huerta weighs in between 123½ to 125¾ pounds, while Martin has weighed between 120 to 127½ pounds.  The combined win/loss record of their opponents? Huerta’s opponents were 167-132-30. Martin’s opponents were 255-174-23.

The night of world-class boxing is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Roy Englebrecht Promotions’ special edition of “Fight Club O.C.,” and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and AT&T.
