So Cal’s lady faire: Gabriela Fundora back in action

19-year-old Gabriela “Sweet Poison” Fundora (already 2-0) returns to action tomorrow night in Tijuana, taking on Mexico’s Karol Mazariegos (1-0-1, 1 KO) in a super flyweight four-rounder to open festivities at the Najera Boxing Promotions’ event at their Round 13 function at the Big Punch Arena.

The younger sister of world-ranked super welterweight contender Sebastian “Towering Inferno” Fundora, is a lofty 5’ 9” former USA Amateur Boxing standout in our local USA Amateur Boxing LBC 44 Cal Border. Trained by her father, Freddy Fundora, at his increasingly popular gym in Coachella, California, the skilful southpaw says her busy schedule since turning pro is all part of a larger plan.

“I’m feeling stronger and stronger, faster and faster and excited to get back in the ring,” said Fundora, who was last seen in July of this year, taking a unanimous decision from Texas brawler Indeya Smith. “I don’t know much about Karol Mazariegos, but we are trying our best to stay super busy and get as much experience as possible.”

Like her brother, Gabriela is promoted by Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing. She says her busy schedule is part of a plan to take the fast track to a world championship fight.

“My brother and I are working extremely hard in the desert, trying to improve on our craft,” she explains. “I want to get as much promotion as possible, to prepare for what my promoter has planned and that’s a world title by next year. The sky is the limit!”

From a boxing family where three of her brothers, her father and mother were once fighters, Gabriela is the most heavily decorated member of the family thus far while winning regional and national USA Amateur Boxing championships, to include the 2017 USA National Junior Championship, where she was named “Boxer of the Tournament” as well as winning the Junior Olympics twice, plus the 2017 USA Eastern and Western Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.

You talk about your confident to perhaps way over-confident people in boxing Fundora’s promoter has been making some quite outlandish statements: “Gabriela ‘Sweet Poison’ Fundora will be a world champion a year from now. I guarantee it. She is too much for most of the fighters in her division, so we are taking a fast route to the top. We are keeping her sharp and ready for when the day comes for her to win her first belt from one of the current champions.”
