The Mayweather vs Maidana glove controversy, the untrustibles

The controversial gloves (l) are the gloves ordered by the Marcos Maidana/Robert Garcia camp. The firestorm of controversy revolved around the placement of the padding which is more horsehair than foam, a matter that should have been reconciled well before Friday evening.

Once again there’s a wild and wooly controversy involving the Robert Garcia camp as they maneuvered to have these 8 ounce MX Everlast gloves used in Saturday’s Championship fight. The gloves, according to the Floyd Mayweather Jr. camp, have far less padding than usual and especially far less protection around the knuckles. One pair of gloves was already opened and the other was still in the plastic wrap when Floyd Mayweather Jr. got to slide his hand inside one of the gloves.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s sentiments were understandable. Listen for yourself: 

This last minute controversy arose over the gloves being used in the 12 round Welterweight Title Fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana. And, before you knew it, the dispute had both parties getting all testy. 

The glove size of 8 ounces was agreed upon long ago, long before any weigh-ins. Now at the last minute we see the Floyd Mayweather camp all hot and bothered about the glove size and wanting Maidana to now wear the larger 10 ounce Grant gloves. Critics are saying Mayweather must have been getting nervous and thought the 8 ounce MX Everlast gloves were too risky. 

Custom made Blue Color gloves made by the Garcia Camp? Thin padding in the wrong place. Above 147 pounds you’re suppose to use 10 oz. gloves. Under 147 pounds, they use 8 ounce gloves. The difference between the foam and horse hair gloves, most like the foam. The problem was with the variation in the padding of the gloves ordered by the Maidana group.

As a rule, Manny Pacquiao fights with 8 ounce Reyes gloves, just as Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy “The Hitman” Hearns did. Perhaps all that talk about Floyd Mayweather never taking a fight unless he has a major advantage is true. The larger 10 ounce gloves are usually relegated to the females, newcomers and sparring/training sessions in the gym.

Maidana might not be as seasoned a fighter, as technically sound, but he definitely has a puncher’s chance when he wings those big overhand rights and then goes ape-sh## on your head. As boxing pundits have said, if Maidana touches Mayweather, he’s human and he’s going down. Maidana has one punch KO power. Mayweather only takes fights if he knows he can win, so maybe he’s gonna make Maidana use a pair of pillows by Everlast.

Not to sound one-sided but isn’t it funny how not one person considered that these controversial gloves could have been out of spec. Right away everyone believed that the Garcia/Maidana Camp was trying to pull a fast one. Altering the gloves is cheating and having the gloves altered by the manufacturer are one in the same. The lack of padding must have been noticed by the manufacturer and the Garcia Camp.

They say Maidana does what Mike Tyson did to his gloves. He digs in his knuckles deep into the fabric.

More than a few people have doubts about Floyd Mayweather Jr. winning tomorrow night. Recently, they’ve seen him in a different light – like a moth that keeps flying closer and closer to the hot light. Case in point is this late night run to a restaurant for food. Instead of getting his proper sleep, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was behind the wheel at 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
With all these warning signs pointing to the unusual, could we finally see Floyd Mayweather Jr. lose for the first time?

No doubt these controversial blue gloves will become famous and likely end up in some Hall of Fame or Hall of Shame Museum.
