Thompson Boxing adds to their growing list of San Diego area boxers by signing Carlos Carlson

On Tuesday, Thompson Boxing Promotions signed undefeated bantamweight prospect Carlos “Memin” Carlson (11-0, 8 KOs) from Tijuana, Mexico to an exclusive promotional contract.
“Roberto Sandoval, our top boxing agent in Mexico, turned us on to Carlos Carlson, and once we watched him live, we knew it was only a matter of time before we brought him into the fold,” said Alex Camponovo, general manager and matchmaker for Thompson Boxing Promotions. “At five-foot-seven, Carlos has great size for the division. He carries power in both hands, which boxing fans love because it makes for entertaining fights.”
“I feel very fortunate to be in this position,” said the 23-year-old Carlson. “I’d like to thank Ken Thompson, Alex Camponovo, my coach Oscar Gonzalez and my manager Roberto Sandoval for providing me with this great opportunity. I want to reach the top of this game and that’s to one day become a world champion.”

With his aggressive, all out style, he’s one of these fighters not afraid to take a punch in order to deliver two or three in response. Both Camponovo and Thompson were on hand to watch Carlson’s last performance on August 30th at the Four Points By Sheraton Hotel in San Diego. In that slugfest against a durable, veteran like Pablo Cupul, Carlson impressed the Orange, CA duo with his ferocious pounding of his opponent and showed off his big left hook which sent Cupul to the canvas in the second round of a scheduled six rounder. When you have a quick jab, an endless motor, and stop eight of your 11 opponents by knockout, you’re bound to have promoters knocking on your door.
“I want to knock the heads off my opponents,” said Carlson. “I throw a lot of punches, but it’s not the out of control type that you see with a lot of young boxers. It’s calculated; every punch sets up the next one. I’m also a student of the game. I like breaking down film with my trainers. My philosophy is the more I immerse myself in the sport, the more I’ll learn and the quicker I’ll develop.
“I’m always in the gym, always working hard. I never leave for tomorrow what I can do today. I love to fight. My job is to knock my opponents out.
“I’ve fought most of my professional fights in and around Tijuana. It’s great to have fans that support you. I hope I can continue to win over the boxing fans in the United States.”
Carlson’s first fight under the Thompson Boxing Promotions’ banner is tentatively set for Friday, October 18, in Ontario, CA at the Doubletree Hotel. The fight will likely be a six-rounder with an opponent to be named.
Married for five years, Carlson has a three-year-old daughter.
