After the matchmaker did his job, nine of the ten boxers showed up promptly for the 5 p.m. weigh-in; all except for one lost sheep, Yogli Herrera (22-13-0, 15 KOs), who was traveling from San Onofre, Columbia, South America. While everyone was completing their mandatory weigh-in, Herrera’s opponent Chris Martin (20-0-2, 6 KOs) sat
waiting. Martin, the California State Super Bantamweight Champ, should have been irritated, but he wasn’t. Finally, after waiting an hour and forty minutes, Mr. Herrera made his grand entrance. Then after stripping bare-naked, they discovered he was two pounds over weight. His handlers ask for more time to lose the weight but the commissioner denied their request. It must have been all that delicious airline food.As has been the case in the past, Martin told the California Boxing Commission official that it didn’t matter. And so the last of the combatants had completed their weighed in.

Even though Ronald Hurley (4-5-2) of San Jacinto, Ca. is six inches taller, Angel Torres (right), his opponent, out weighs him by two pounds. Torres, who recently arrived here from Yonkers, New York, has plans to settle here permanently. He now trains at Chula Vista’s Alliance Training Center under the guidance of Sergio Melendrez.
