Weigh-ins for the Golden Boy Live! show to be held Thursday night at the Del Mar Fairgrounds were completed today, Wednesday, at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel in Sorrento Valley. It appears San Diego boxing fans are going to be in for a real treat tomorrow night, when Golden Boy Promotions joins with the popular Ringside at Del Mar Boxing Series group to host a FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes’ Golden Boy Live! show. The fight card is stacked with local favorites and top prospects.
In the televised main event, they have Fairfield, CA standout Alan Sanchez (14-3-1, 8 KOs) battling veteran contender Ed “The Lion” Parades (35-4-1, 23 KOs) in a 10-round welterweight match.

In the co-feature they had penciled in Manuel “Tino” Avila (left, 16-0, 7 KOs) in a junior featherweight clash with Jose Luis “Tapitas” Araiza (right, 34-9-1, 25 KOs) but after Araiza’s sit down with the fight doctor, the fight had to be scrapped due to Araiza failing his physical. No sweat there, they quickly added Australian lightweight standout “Wild” Will Tomlinson (22-1-1, 12 KOs) to face Miguel Zamudio (31-5-1, 18 KOs) of Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico for his eight-rounder.

Fighting out of Melbourne, Australia, the 28-year-old Tomlinson won several regional titles down under and was racing towards a world title shot when he became victim of a recent upset loss to Jerry Belmontes in March. He bounced back with a victory in August over Alberto Cupido that put him right back in contention.
We can’t discount Zamudio’s losses. They came to formidable foes like southpaw Javier Fortuna (26-0, 19 KOs), Sharif Bogere (26-1-0, 18 KOs), Adrian Young (19-1-2, 15 KOs) and Saul Rodriguez (14-0, 11 KOs).
The promoter feels the sparks are really going to fly in the six round middleweight TV bout featuring Merida, Yucatan, Mexico’s Elias “The Latin Kid” Espadas (6-1, 3 KOs) when he goes up against Carlos “Macho” Lopez (5-1-1, 3 KOs) from San Juan, Puerto Rico. As far as weight, both pugilists weighed in at 160 pounds.

The San Diego boxing community will be well represented as 25-year-old, light heavyweight Ulises Sierra (7-0-2, 5 KOs) will be risking his unbeaten record in a four-round rematch with fellow San Diegan Loren Myers (9-19-1, 2 KOs). They met in February at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Mission Valley and the heated battle had to be stopped after Myers suffered a nasty cut to his lip that required more than a few stitches.
At Wednesday’s weigh-ins for this four rounder, Sierra weighed 170 pounds while Myers weighed 168. In their previous match, it was the other way around. Myers was overweight and Sierra signed off on the difference. This time, Myers was not as chivalrous and Sierra was penalized 20% of his purse.

Another match, a four-round welterweight clash, has two more locals Brian Nevarez (1-0) of Oceanside, CA who not only trains but instructs at the Rhino’s Boxing Club in Vista, doing battle with Mario Angeles (1-5-2) of San Diego.
On the scales Brian Nevarez (l) weighed 144.5 while Mario Angeles (r) weighed 146.
Next up, it was 24 year-old, 5’7” Adrian Vargas (11-0-1, 7 KOs) from nearby National City looking to keep his positive momentum going in a six-round junior welterweight match against the veteran Mario “Popeyin” Hermosillo (12-16-4, 2 KOs) from Tijuana. Hermosillo’s record over his last seven bouts is 0-6-1. In the six losses, the 5’5” Popeyin has been KO’d five times.
Wednesday afternoon, on the scales, Adrian Vargas (l) weighed in at 148.5 pounds while his opponent Mario Hermosillo (r) weighed 146.5 pounds.
Scheduled next was the junior Flyweight six-round bout between Oceanside’s Jonathan Quiroz (5-2, 1 KO) and Oxnard’s Daniel Covielles (3-1, 1 KO) which had to be cancelled when Covielles couldn’t make weight. On Wednesday he weighed 118 pounds, which would make him a Super Bantamweight.
To start the evening off, they have a four-round junior featherweight bout between San Diego’s Jorge “Tito” Ruiz (6-2, 2 KOs) going up against Raymond Chacon (5-11) of Los Angeles. Ruiz, now with a new trainer will be tested when facing the clever southpaw who can be quite slick.
On the scale, Jorge Ruiz (r) weighed 124.5 lbs. Raymond Chacon (l) weighed 125.
