As is often the case there have been some changes to the boxing card that is to take place on Friday, July 23rd at the Pechanga Resort and Casino. The above bout sheet has the latest information.

In the main event their featuring the 28 year-old Scottish middleweight Craig McEwan who is now a Hollywood-based boxer and getting closer and closer to being ranked in the top ten in his division. His backers feel his big opportunity should come next year. McEwan stands six-foot tall and has a reach of 72 inches. His training began at an East Lothian boxing gym, the Bronx Boxing Club in Tranent which is 11 miles outside of Edinburgh, Scotland. He currently trains under the watchful eye of Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.

When McEwan steps into the ring Friday night, he will be facing his toughest opponent to date. Danny Perez has never been knocked out and up until Shane Mosley’s KO of Antonio Margarito last year, he was known as the only man to knock Margarito off his feet. McEwan is a slick boxer who turned pro in 2006 and has breezed through his first eighteen opponents. In his last fight, he stopped Canadian light middleweight champion Kris Andrews (16-9-2, 4 KO’s). McEwan is considered one of the best amateur boxers that Scotland has ever produced. He was a bronze medalist at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Why is he fighting Perez? Golden Boy Promotions has repeatedly said that marquee opposition is refusing to face the Scottish dynamo.

Danny Perez, who started boxing when he was 11 years-old, turned pro in 1996.

Perez, who hales from nearby Carlsbad, CA, is looking to bounce back from two decision losses at the hands of Carlos Molina (17-4-1, 5 KO’s) and his last opponent, Cuban sensation Erislandy Lara (12-0, 7 KO’s).  Perez is the former NABF welterweight champion and has many notable victories under his belt.

In the six round featherweight co-main event, they have 23-year-old Charles Huerta (13-1, 7 KO’s) from Paramount, CA.  He squares off against Mexico’s Jonathan Arias (10-6, 8 KO’s). Huerta’s only blemish came by way of a knockout at 59 seconds of the first round to Derrick Wilson (7-1-2, 2 KO’s). If Arias knows what’s good for him, he might want imitate Wilson’s strategy and come out firing.
On the undercard you have knock out artist Keith Thurman (12-0, 11 KO’s) facing Stalinn Lopez (7-0, 3 KO’s) in an 8-round welterweight bout. Thurman has knocked out 11 of 12 opponents with eight of those kayos coming in the opening round.
His opponent, Lopez, was born January 29, 1978 in Sagua La Grande, Cuba and now resides in Miami, Fla. That life path can mean only one thing. Even though he’s had only seven professional bouts, more than likely he’s has a ton of amateur experience.
Also on the undercard, the Roger Mayweather trained Dion Savage (8-0) will be facing a 40 year-old veteran by the name of Demetrius Davis (20-22-5, 8 KO’s) whose record is now skewed in the wrong direction after losing eight of his last nine bouts.
Taken on face value, that losing streak seems horrendous. But consider this, seven of his last 11 opponents were undefeated. Davis, who stands 6 foot tall, has done surprisingly well against some of the top people in his division.  In January 2009, he stunned previously unbeaten Rowland Bryant by taking a unanimous decision in Bryant’s home state of Florida.

After winning his debut back on December 13, 2008, Nicholaus Briannes (1-5-0, 5 KO’s) has seen nothing but losses, and all are in the KO column. His opponent in Bout #2, Anthony Martinez, (3-0-0, 3 KO’s) has yet to see one of his fights go beyond 1:28 of the second round. Can you guess who’s going to win that bout?

The 37 year-old Steve Macomber (3-8-1) of Sacramento, CA. will face 24 year-old Cerresso Fort, who hales from Saint Paul, Minnesota. Fort has been fed almost all lightweights thus far, softies with names like Kane Pudwill, Yancy Cuellar, Mike Krull, who have a combined record of 30-55-6. Only one boxer, Lamar Harris, managed to go the distance. Macomber might last two rounds but in all likelihood he won’t be around by round number four.
