Weigh-ins for Wednesday’s Clash of Champions at Las Pulgas

Once again, Promociones Mayen has the boxing card stacked with talent for another in a series of outstanding boxing shows at Salon Las Pulgas on Avenida Revolucion in Downtown Tijuana.

Looking over the competition for Wednesday’s show:

In the Main Event is the impressive Edivaldo Ortega, a Tijuana favorite, who remains undefeated at 15-0 with 7 KOs. In his last five outings, he’s faced boxers with a combined record of 28-13-5, and even more important 17 KOs. As they say, Ortega has been battle tested.

Ortega’s opponent, Jose Guadalupe Tapia, is from Mexicali and he’s a six year veteran. In his last outing, he lost a close decision to Jesus Lopez (5-7-1). Before that match, he had won four straight with two early stoppages.

In the Main Event is Edivaldo Ortega (R) the local champion from Tijuana being challenged by the determined visitor from Mexicali, Guadalupe Tapia.

Israel Arellano (right) with 5 wins, 4 KOs will be facing Jose Ezequiel (5-1-1, 3 KOs).

Any talk about the “Fight of the Night” will likely include one of the Arellano brothers from San Ysidro, CA. Knockout artist Israel “Mr. KO” Arellano (5-0-0, 4 KOs) is facing Jose Ezequiel Avilez (5-1-1, 3 KOs). Both are big punchers and have 7 KOs between them. You’ll never see either boxer backing up.

Ezequiel has but one loss and that split decision loss came against a fine opponent, Sergio Ortega, who is now 11-0.

Antonio Arellano (right) (6-0-1, 2 KOs) will be facing Jesus Valadez (6-1-0, 3 KOs).

Israel’s older brother, Antonio Arellano (6-0-1, 2 KOs) will also have his hands full when facing Jesus Valadez (6-1-0, 3 KOs). 

In his last outing, Arellano, a lightweight/super-lightweight at the most, showed true grit when he defeated the taller, bigger welterweight Victor “Cina” Fonseca at Unidad Deportiva in Tecate on August 4, 2012. After sustaining a serious cut on the chin in round three, he pressed on to match Fonseca blow for blow to gain an unanimous decision victory.

The 19 year-old Jesus “Bombardero” Valadez has been quite active since turning pro on October 16, 2011. He fought six times in 2012, going 5-1 with 2 KOs. The one loss, a fourth round stoppage, came in his last outing against Jose Luis Vazquez. Valadez is eager to get back on the winning track.

Sandra “the Black Pearl” Robles (L) will be facing Diana “the Huntress” Marquez (R).

Another clash that should have everyone’s attention is the Sandra “Perla Negra” Robles (1-0) versus Diana “La Cazadora” Marquez bout, translation “the Black Pearl” versus “the Huntress.”

In Robles’ last outing, she defeated the very tough Kealani Vanderleest of San Diego. The Tijuana “Huntress,” another femme fatale from Tijuana, has been fighting MMA and will now give boxing a try. She is making her pro-debut.

Also on the undercard is Robles’ younger brother, 16 year-old “Sexy Boy” Robles (R) facing 17 year-old Marino Canete. Both will be making their Pro-debuts.

Also featured is 16 year-old sensation Carlos “Baby” Castañeda (4-1-0, 2 KOs) (right) who got started when he was only 15. He’ll be facing 24-year-old Carlos Avila (0-1-1) who now resides in Tijuana but is formerly from Sonora.

Ivan Reyes (left) is looking forward to facing Rosalio “Aspid” Rios in their rematch.

Ivan Reyes (4-3-0, 4 KOs) defeated Rosalio “Aspid” Rios (5-0-0, 4 KOs) when they were amateurs. Therefore he’s been looking forward to their rematch. Since October 30, 2009, a KO loss to Hector Zepeda, Reyes has only fought once, a TKO loss June, 15, 2012 to Raul Franco.

Undefeated super middleweight Antonio Gutierrez (8-0-1) (right) is hoping to keep his slate clean when he faces Angel Estrada who will be making his pro-debut.

Jorge “Tito” Ruiz (left) of the Alliance Training Center in Chula Vista, CA will be going after win #2 when he faces the much shorter Gustavo Munoz (right) who is making his pro-debut.

 Add-0n bouts 

Bout #10 has middleweights Francisco Flores (right) (1-0) going up against Jose Manuel Hernandez (0-0-1). Note well: Hernandez just fought 15 days ago, on February 27, 2013, a controversial draw with Hugo Gutierrez. One this reporter felt Hernandez had won. 

According to Box-Rec, Flores last fought on July 6, 2012 – a hard fought unanimous decision victory over Juan Carlos Moreno at the same venue, Las Pulgas. 

The final two bouts were late add-ons to an already jam-packed fight card. Jose Angel “Sonrics” Suarez (L) of the Sangre Nueva Gym in Tijuana, is making his pro-debut against Kevin Moreno (0-1) from Rosarito, B. C., Mexico. 

In the final bout they have two locals, Hector Flores (right) (1-0) going up against Francisco Pedroza (0-1). Flores is returning to Las Pulgas where he won his debut bout against Janathan Coronado on January 30th of this year, while Pedroza lost his opener to Jose Toribio who is from the Undisputed Gym in San Diego’s downtown.
